The history of Fleischer's Hotel

Little of the history

Historic Fleischer's Hotel has been visible in the valley above Lake Vangsvatnet since 1864. Today's hotel building was completed in 1889. However, the history goes back further than that.

The family's ancestor, Johan Seckman Fleischer, settled at Voss as early as 1760. He is the great-grandfather of the hotel's founder, Fredrik Fleischer, and the great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather of today's host.

The founder - Fredrik Lyth Ørum Fleischer

The founder of Fleischer's Hotel, Fredrik Lyth Ørum Fleischer, sold Voss Church to Voss Municipality in 1864. The church had been owned by the Fleischer family since 1752, but now the time had come to start hotel operations. The hotel quickly became popular and has been visited by kings, emperors and nobles throughout the ages. Most recently in 2014 and 2015, the Crown Prince of Dubai visited. Little did Fleischer himself know that it would become a 150-year-long success story.

Fredrik Fleischer ran the hotel together with his wife Magdalene, hence you will find Restaurant Magdalene and Fredrik's Bar in today's hotel. In 2013, our à la carte restaurant Seckman was opened, named after Johan Seckman Fleischer.

The Swiss style

Fleischer's Hotel was built in the Swiss style. This building style was popular in Norway from approximately 1850-1910 and is inspired by the architecture of the Alps. The Swiss style is characterized, among other things, by high floor height, veranda extension, facade clad with plowed panels, carved details and richly profiled mouldings.

Development and renovation

The hotel has been expanded in several rounds. Our oldest historical part is from 1889, albeit with some changes. In the years 1938-39, there was a major rebuilding when the terrace was extended, and the kitchen, kitchen, reception and entrance area were rebuilt. The salons were also completely renovated. 13 of the rooms had a private bathroom, and 30 rooms had a sink with hot and cold water. During World War II, Fleischer's Hotel was occupied by the Germans and the hotel was one of the few buildings on Voss that was not bombed.

In 1957, the 4th generation, Olaf Fleischer took over Tønjum and in 1959 the new building was completed - the Olaf wing. This building was built in 1993 and also received the characteristic Swiss style.

Fleischer's Motel was built in the 1960s, following a model from America. This was an offer for travelers by car. The hotel got its own swimming pool in 1977, at the same time a new dance restaurant, Top Spot, was built, and a state-of-the-art course and conference center was opened.

In 2006, the hotel opened a new department in the station building with 25 modern rooms. These are connected to Fleischer's Hotel by a footbridge. A serious fire in the kitchen in 2008 led to the hotel having to close for a few months. When the reconstruction was finished in the summer of 2009, the Fleischer family could open a brand new, state-of-the-art kitchen, service and buffet area.
